The tropical storm and rainy season is set to begin on May 15, according to experts.
Mexico – This year, the Pacific Ocean is expected to experience a weak El Niño, which could trigger a higher number of extreme weather events. That’s why we need to be ready, warned Blanca Jiménez, Director of Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua).
Speaking during an interagency meeting held at the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), environmental engineer Jiménez emphasized the need for preparedness ahead of the upcoming rainy and tropical cyclone season, which runs from May 15 to November 30.
To ensure an effective response before, during, and after any potential emergency, David León Romero, National Coordinator of Civil Protection, proposed a unified approach—setting aside political affiliations and encouraging collaboration across all three levels of government—as well as building closer communication with the general public.
According to UNAM Global, a special working group called the Interagency Analysis and Coordination Group for Tropical Cyclones was created to support this strategy. The group includes:
-
Ministry of Public Security (SSP)
-
Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT)
-
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT)
-
Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA)
-
Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR)
-
Federal Electricity Commission (CFE)
"We’re working together and taking preventive steps ahead of the upcoming hurricane and rainy season. Alongside this coordinated effort, we’re reviewing protocols for communication, data sharing, and interagency coordination so we can respond efficiently to any emergency situation—before, during, and after,” they stated.
The official forecast for the number of hurricanes expected this season will be released on May 15 at a summit in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero.
To better handle emergencies and reduce the impact of these weather events, the government has structured a comprehensive response plan based on three main pillars: prevention, preparedness, and communication.
