New year, new tropical cyclone season!

If you live near the Atlantic coast, you already know the drill—tropical storm season comes with the territory. But getting your home ready for a hurricane doesn’t have to be a massive project. In fact, it might be as simple as pushing a button to activate your storm protection system.

In this post, we’re sharing some of our top tips to help you secure your windows against strong hurricane winds—and we’ll also answer a key question:

How should you prepare for the 2021 hurricane season?

1. Keep an eye on updates from the National Hurricane Center

The one advantage hurricanes have over other natural disasters is that they’re predictable. Unlike an earthquake, for example, tropical storms give you time to prepare and put a safety plan in place.

One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk is by monitoring storm activity in the Atlantic. In Mexico, you can check the Comisión Nacional del Agua (CONAGUA) website. If you’re elsewhere, follow your local National Hurricane Center or visit the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) website.

2. Create an emergency plan

Planning ahead is key when it comes to staying safe during hurricane season. Talk to your family about what steps you’ll take before, during, and after a storm. A solid emergency plan can make all the difference.

Here are a few basics your plan should include:

  • Stock up on food and supplies you’ll need during the storm.

  • Assign responsibilities to each family member ahead of time.

  • Choose a safe room in case a window or door gets damaged.

  • Keep flashlights, batteries, and containers for storing drinking water. Remember—services like electricity and water may be interrupted during the storm.

3. Secure your windows ahead of time

This is probably the most important tip we can give. It’ll not only make life easier when a storm hits but also help ensure your family’s safety. Installing a hurricane protection system allows you to secure your home as easily as drawing a curtain or pressing a button.

Aluminum hurricane screens and shutters are fantastic options. They install quickly, are low-profile, and are always ready to go when you need them.
