One of the few upsides of hurricanes—compared to other natural disasters—is that their impact can be greatly reduced if you take a few simple prevention steps.
What hurricane prevention measures can I take?
As we mentioned, the tips we’re about to share are simple enough that anyone can follow them. In fact, if you live in an area that's often hit by hurricanes, typhoons, or heavy storms, it’s highly recommended that you do. These steps won’t just help reduce damage—they’ll also help you stay calm and act appropriately in an emergency.
1. Choose a safe room in advance
Having a solid emergency plan is essential in hurricane-prone areas. One of the smartest things you can do is designate a safe room and prepare it ahead of time. Talk with your family and agree on what to do if something breaks into the house during a storm. Ideally, your safe room should be one without windows and with a strong, secure door.
2. Keep emergency supplies stocked
One of the most common issues during hurricane season is panic buying. People rush to the stores and clear out shelves of non-perishable goods. That’s why it’s a good idea to plan ahead. Around March or April—when hurricane season begins—consider stocking up on canned goods and long-lasting products you can store year-round.
If you already have an emergency kit at home with food, hygiene supplies, and basic medicine, you’ll feel a lot more prepared—and a lot less stressed—when a storm is coming.
3. Install hurricane protection screens
Another step you can take ahead of time is to install hurricane protection screens on your doors and windows. These are tough, easy to use, and designed to keep out strong winds, flying debris, and rain—keeping you and your home much safer during a storm.
4. Emergency lighting
Nobody likes being stuck in total darkness during a storm, right? That’s why we strongly recommend keeping your emergency lights charged or having some candles on hand. These aren’t just useful for when the power goes out—they can also help pass the time.
You could read a book, for example. Or if you have young kids, grab some marshmallows and turn it into a fun little "indoor camping" night. Anything to keep spirits up and reduce the fear that can come with big storms.
As you can see, these are four simple but powerful ways to prepare for hurricane season.
