Issued by the National Hurricane Center, Miami, FL

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico:
A broad and nearly stationary area of low pressure located over the southeastern Yucatán Peninsula is slowly becoming better organized. While showers, thunderstorms, and strong wind gusts are currently focused mostly over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, gradual development is expected as the system drifts northward near the Yucatán Peninsula.
Environmental conditions are forecast to become more favorable for development early next week, and it’s likely that a tropical or subtropical depression will form by late Saturday over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.
Regardless of development, locally heavy rain is expected across western Cuba, much of Florida, and the northern Gulf Coast through early next week. Additionally, the risk of rip currents will steadily increase along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana throughout Memorial Day weekend.
